The war memorial, Bildeston, has been designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * It is a record of the two cataclysmic wars of the C20 and their impact on the nation and the local community. * Its popular obelisk design is elegant, and is enhanced by decorative detail. * It has group value with the buildings around the Market Place, all of which are listed.

War memorial; erected in 1920; made of Portland stone on a stone base.
EXTERIOR: Bildeston war memorial consists of an obelisk rising from a square plinth set on a stepped base. At the top of the obelisk is carved swagged decoration, above which is a ball; there is also decorative carving around the base of the obelisk. Two opposing sides of the plinth carry the fourteen names of those who died in the First World War, and a third carries the inscription 'In grateful memory of the men of Bildeston who gave their lives for their country 1914-1918'. On the fourth side is the inscription 'Also the war 1939-1945' followed by five names.
HISTORY: Bildeston war memorial was unveiled in 1920 by Mr A E Hoare, and carries fifteen names, to which five were added after the Second World War.
