War memorial, c.1921, sandstone. WWII inscription added later. Octagonal column on square base and plinth surmounted by capital in form of dragon. Neo-Gothic tabernacle finial contains statue of St George.
Stepped square plinth. Inscription on lower step reads 'Let us so live that they shall not have died in vain' in Medieval transcript style. Octagonal base commemorates 8 soldiers lost during WWI on north, south and east faces in gold lettering. Inscription on rear (west) face reads 'To the glory of God and in grateful remembrance of those of this township who gave their lives in the service of their country 1914-1919'. Fluted octagonal column with square column base inscribed on east face in embossed lettering '1939-1945 Stewart Broome, Walter Green, Ernest Smith'. Column capital in form of dragon. Elaborate Neo-Gothic tabernacle finial above, carved foliage crockets, niche containing carbon fibre figure of knight possibly St George (1988 replacement of stolen bronze original).
Also included: paved areas, steps and two low rubble walls forming platform and gateway for memorial.
HISTORY: Commissioned by Civil Parish of Appleton and unveiled on 12th November 1921 in a ceremony led by Lt Col Charles Lyon of Appleton Park, whose son is one of those commemorated. The Hon Canon C F Cross, Rural Dean, conducted the dedication ceremony. Designed by local architect Captain Frederick Jardine Barnish. Memorial commemorates men connected to the village who were lost in the First and Second World Wars.
