War memorial. Unveiled September 1908 by General Sir Neville
Lyttleton, the sculptor being . Robert Colton ARA. Ashlar
plinth surmounted by bronze figures. Plinth has 3 steps to
base, oblong on plan with chamfered angles inscribed: 'Their
bodies are buried in peace;/ but their names liveth for
evermore. Ecclus XLIV 14' and with moulded band then central
block with inscription: 'IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/
WORCESTER-/ SHIRE WHO IN/SOUTH AFRICA/ GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR
THEIR/ COUNTRY./ AD1899-1902'; crowning cornice. Surmounted by
figure of soldier with rifle, in 'ready' position, with winged
figure of Victory behind holding laurel wreath. An
exceptionally fine sculpture, which also constitutes a
significant streetscape feature, forming part of the setting
for Worcester Cathedral (qv).
