Church of St James
II
Church. 1856-7, probably enlarged. By A Rimmer. Coursed
rock-faced red sandstone rubble, steeply-pitched slate roofs.
STYLE: c1300.
PLAN: nave with west steeple, north and south porches to this,
gabled wings to the second bay, twin-gabled north and south
transepts, large chancel with various gabled side offices to
the south (the largest embraced by a lean-to extension on the
east side of the transept).
EXTERIOR: the 4-stage tower, with diagonal buttresses and a
short broach spire, has a 2-light west window and coupled
lancet belfry windows; the spire has lucarnes on 2 levels. The
gabled porches have side buttresses and unobtrusive doorways
in the east sides.
The south wall has stepped 3-light windows with cusped lights
in the first, fourth and fifth bays; the wings to the second
bay and each gable of the transepts have 2-centred arched
3-light windows with differing tracery; and the roof has 3
gabled wooden dormers each with 4 arched lights.
The chancel has a large east window of 5 cusped lights, and
elaborate tracery in the head.
INTERIOR: single vessel, with queen strut roof trusses and
steel tie-rods; good stained glass windows.
