30.11.51 Hindringham Hall

II*

Moated manor house referred to in a lease of 1562 as "now being builded and edifyied". Flint with red brick dressings and red pantiled roofs. 'E'-plan house of 2 storeys with attics. Spine of house is hall range, with porch and 2 gabled wings to south. South-east wing perhaps earlier than 1562, with one wooden mullioned and transomed window to each floor and chamfered brick mullioned windows to returns, kneelers and parapetted gable. East return with 2 storey crow-stepped gabled wing. South-west gable larger with one mullioned and transomed window to each floor, stone kneelers, stepped parapet and central finial, on west return projecting brick stack. Hall range with off-centre 2 storey stepped gabled porch with proto-classical details to entrance with architrave consoles and 2 string courses. One mullioned and transomed window in gable. One first floor window to east, to west the hall with 2 ground and 2 first floor mullioned and transomed windows. East and west returned gables of hall range with crow-stepped gables and finials. Rear with 2 projecting wings, to east with stepped gable, to north c1900. Four major stacks, 2 built out as projections with stepped set offs, one springing from the eaves, the fourth c1900. Shafts of all stacks and finials to gables are of the c1900 restoration of the house. Interior largely of c1900 with screens passage and single storey hall.
