10/1 Hornby Hall and barns adjoining 6.2.68 II*

Farmhouse and barns adjoining. Early or mid C16 with late C16 additions and C17 alterations; late C18 barns and late C19 addition. Oldest part large blocks of red sandstone rubble with extension of dressed coursed sandstone. Graduated greenslate roof with banded red sandstone chimney stacks, one rebuilt in brick. Barns of red sandstone rubble under graduated greenslate roof. Central 2-storey, 5-bay, hall and left 2-bay extension under common roof, and rear 2-storey, 4-bay, late Cl9 extension. Right lower 3-bay barn. Off-centre multi-storey porch has Tudor-arched doorway under panel of Birkbeck arms; 2-light round-headed stone-mullioned window above with hoodmould and small round-headed window over with hoodmould. Pointed-arched doorway within. Left 3- and 4-light stone-mullioned windows with rounded heads under hoodmoulds, the left window of the 3 being a C19 restoration, with blocked doorway beyond. One upper-floor Tudor window has been blocked and all others replaced by C17 mullioned-and-transomed windows. Right of the porch is a 2-light Tudor window over a C19 pent extension with sandstone slate roof. Extension has a gabled stone porch and sash windows in stone surrounds, those on left double. Right return wall, now under archway of barn, has a 2-light original window. Rear has 4-light Tudor window with 3-light late C16 window above; otherwise all late C19 sash windows and C20 casements. Rear extension has sash windows in stone surrounds. Barns have 2 segmental-arched cart entrances at front and a left segmental-arched loft doorway, reached by external stone steps over a through archway. Rear has regularly-spaced round-arched doorways and 2 similar loft doorways. Eaves slit vents. Interior of house has beamed ceilings and some C16 moulded plasterwork. C16 segmental-arched stone fireplaces. Doorway has lintel inscribed and dated T.I.B. 1602 (Birkbeck). C17 overmantel incorporating Birkbeck arms. Further upper-floor plasterwork; the ceiling on the first floor of the porch is dated 1584. See RCHM, Westmorland, 1936, pp.62-3. All further extensions not described are not of interest.
