TF 09 NE OWERSBY CATER LANE Thornton le Moor

5/42 Thornton House II

House; 1826, with later C19 addition to rear; buff brick with painted stucco dressings and hipped slate roof having 2 brick wall stacks. 2 storey 5 bay front with central 6 panelled door with bordered overlight flanked by reeded pilasters and covered by porch with entablature supported on columns. To either side are 2 plain sashes with splayed rilled lintels; the 1st floor has 5 similar windows. Interior: the entrance hall has a moulded cornice with leafy panels and ceiling rose ornament. From the hall is an archway leading to the staircase which is contained in a semi-circular projection which has been obscured externally by the later rear wing. It has a semi-circular headed window with bordered sashes with coloured glass. The staircase has plain balusters and carved tread ends and swept hand rail. The stairwell ceiling has a decorative cornice. Both principal rooms have plain moulded architraves and cornices and arched alcoves either side of contemporary fireplaces.
