LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH
SS7149 MARKET STREET, Lynton 858-1/4/37 (West side) 03/09/73 Lynton Museum and attached boundary walls and gate (Formerly Listed as: LYNTON MARKET STREET (West side) St Vincent Cottage)
GV II
Detached house. Mid C18 with mid C19 windows. Limewashed rubble, stone slate front slope and slate rear slope to roof. A symmetrical block with a small rear range, and a narrow link brought forward to the right, connecting with St Vincent (qv). 2 storeys; 3-window front, all 2-light casement with margin bars, to slate cills. Central 6-panel door. There are brick gable stacks, and the left gable is plain, the right gable slate hung. The rear has a small gabled wing to the left, and there is a glazed pent-roofed gallery projecting forward to the right. INTERIOR: the ground floor is in 2 rooms without dividing passage, with a lime-ash floor to the left; no beams or joists are exposed. A lateral stair rises to the left, with a landing balustrade with thin turned balusters. The first floor has many original wide boards. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: enclosing the small garden to the front is a rubble wall to on-edge stone coping, with decorative iron gate to square piers, opposite the entrance door. HISTORICAL NOTE: the house, which lies set well back from the adjoining St Vincent (qv), at one stage was a service range to the latter, and at this time the link was probably constructed. The property was given to the town by Henry Sutton, first Secretary of the Exmoor Society, in 1962.
