4/89 Dovecote House with attached stable, barn & dovecote.

II

House with stable, barn and dovecote attached to south. C17, C18, 1791, C19, C20. Timber frame, blue lias, red brick, coursed ironstone rubble, pantile roof with 3 ridge stacks and single gable stack to north-west. L-plan of 6 bays with open hall and 2 storeys to the north, 5 irregular bays to east front with plain doorway towards south with 2 rectangular, 3 light windows to north-east, with 2 more set above. Above the door and immediately north-east of it are 2 small 2 light windows. To south of door a large rectangular hall window with glazing bars reaches full height of house. All the other windows are C20 casements with leaded lights. South of hall window is a small C19 lean-to attached to extension with datestone inscribed "A.E. 1791". Extension contains a stable and barn with staircase to west with loft and dovecote above. Inside house most of wall plates are intact but only a single post is in situ. North-east wall of hall has studding with white- washed daub infilling reaching up to roof intact. Oak roof with purlins trapped in angles of collars of closed trusses at the ends of hall, and the collar of the open truss in the centre. Character of roof over the rest of the house is identical except for a double collar over north-east bay. Interior of dovecote contains 1200 brick boxes. Source: D. L. Roberts.
