Raised pavement and steps. C19. Revettment of mixed rubble, coping and steps are
mostly volcanic ashlar but include some granite ashlar, pitched cobble pavement.
The pavement of neatly-laid pitched cobbles outside the south gate stands
approximately 1.4 metres above the road level and either side are 4 broad steps
made of large ashlar blocks. The rubble revettment and neater coping ramps down on
either side alongside the steps. The lower pavements each side show pitched cobble
occasionally showing below a C20 gravel resurfacing.
