GV II
Small house. Circa mid C17, extended in C19. English bond red brick with high brick plinth. Red clay pantile roof with gabled ends and small moulded brick kneelers. Brick gable end stack.
1-room plan house with entrance lobby and winder stairs in front of large stack at left (west) gable end. There may have been a service outshut where the Cl9 2-storey outshut is at the rear. Adjoins east of Nos 2 and 3 (qv).
2 storeys and attic. 2-bay south front with brick hood-moulds. First floor left window blocked and ground and first floor right hand windows reduced and smaller C18 3-light casements with leaded panes inserted. Doorway on left with similar hoodmould and plank door. East gable end has large window on each floor with hood- mould, the ground and first floor 5-light ovolo-moulded mullion. transom windows with leaded panes, the outer lights blocked in brick. The 4-light attic window has been similarly reduced to 2- lights and an Cl8 casement inserted. Cery small square stair window in west gable end. Smal Cl9 2-storey brick outshut at rear with pantile lean-to roof and tall stack.
Interior: Ovolo-moulded doorframe from entrance lobby to ground floor room with elaborate aluster-type stops; ground floor room has ovolo-moulded lateral beam with bar and cyma stops and small fireplace with remains of plastered chamfered arch. Winder staircase beside stack. Chambered doorframe from landing to first floor chamber which has chamfered lateral beam with cyma stops, ovolo-moulded beam against stack, also with cyma stops and chamfered and plastered Tudor-arch fireplace with Georgian grate. The attic chamber is ceiled and the roof timbers are inaccessible.
Note: This house is marked as The Parsonage on the 1732 estate map and with No 1 Dairy Cottage (qv) is all that remains of the village to have survived the landscaping of Walterton Park.
