GV II

12 almshouses. 1909. Built for and endowed by William Burkitt in memory of his uncle of the same name. Red brick. Machine tile roofs. Quadrangle plan. Symmetrical entrance facade to street composed of a 2-storey central gatehouse with single-storey wings extending 3 bays right and left. Gatehouse entered through a 4-centred arch. Polygonal angle turrets and 2 further polygonal engaged turrets flanking arch. Mullioned windows. Crenellated facade. Side wings with mullioned windows, gabled roofs and 2 ridge stacks each. Crenellated screen walls extend right and left, with pedestrian entrances. Under entrance arch is a commemorative plaque giving details quoted above. East range of court with a twin-gabled centre lit through two 4-light mullioned windows. Entrance doors to each house under heavy moulded timber hoods.
