SE31NW CRIGGLESTONE CHURCH LANE (west side), Chapelthorpe
2/11 Church of St. James 22.11.66 GV II
Church. c1771, destroyed by fire 1951, rebuilt in facsimile reusing original C18 walls and openings. Ashlar, stone slate roof. Classical style. Rectangular nave. Plinth, sill band and impost band. 3-bay symmetrical pedimented gabled end has 2 original doorways with architraves, pulvinated friezes, consoles and triangular pediments set within semicircular-arched recesses, the voussoirs aligned to the courses. Centre bay has 3-light wooden framed window with same above. Quatrefoil set in apex. Coped gable surmounted by open drum with ogee cap supported by Tuscan columns. Ritual east end has large Venetian window the imposts supported by paired engaged Tuscan columns. Open pedimented gable. Left and right returns of 7 bays: 6 bays of semicircular-arched windows with architraves; 7th bay breaking forward with pedimented gables. Doorway set in side wall on south side.
Interior: c1951. East window has stained glass of that date.
