2. -
A group of buildings from Cl6 onwards, part stone and part brick, forming a
picturesque and complicated group. A good deal of C19 Gothick. Roofs of old
tiles. West side mainly Cl9 with restored narrow centre tower with C14 pointed
stone doorway with corbels and a frieze of angels beneath ogee heads. On the
North side of this is a straight-headed 4-light window with a square dripmould.
C14 head of a king in chimney-stack. 2-light Cl4 window in North gable. North
side of courtyard has date 1637 and above unusual polygonal chimney-stack, perhaps
C14 with attached shafts and moulded capitals and turreted pots.
Adjoining is part of C17 house with crow-stepped gable and a stone-mullioned
bay of 2 storeys with 6-light windows. Date between storeys is 1619. This
side of No 33 is late Cl9 and included as part of the fabric. Entrance to cobbled
yard from street has pair of fine early Cl8 stone gate piers with 'pineapple'
finials. A blocked segmental-headed doorway in wall has small modern dog's
drinking fountain at base, and appealing rhyme. Grotesque built into wall of
garden. All these fragments probably from Sleaford Castle.
Interior of Manor House has 1 early room, behind the 16l9 wing, with panelling
with Tudor Renaissance motifs.
Adjoining is Rhodes House, of mid Cl8. 3 storeys in red brick with wood modillion
eaves cornice. 5 windows, stone lintels, keystones, mostly hung sashes with
glazing bars. Band between ground and lst floor. High stone plinth. Classical
stone doorcase with 3/4 columns and entablature with 2 shell ornaments. Recessed
door of 6 panels. An extension of 2 storeys and 2 windows of mid Cl9. Garden
wall in stone with old tile coping and moulded stone doorway with segmental
pediment.

Nos 23 and 27 to 45 (odd) including the Manor House form a group.
