1/34 The Arabella Aufrere 1-11-66 Temple

Garden temple circa 1787, possibly by James Wyatt, Ashlar red brick, slate roof with lead dressings, lead roofs. 3 bay front with central entrance to rear cella chamber. Central arch springs from coupled Roman Doric columns; beyond to either side are further single columns with similar antae at angles. Central arch rises to a pediment, there are garlanded paterae in the spandrels of the arch. Centrepiece is flanked by balustraded parapets with urns. Above the inner door is the following inscription:-' Dedicated by veneration and affection to the memory of Arabella Aufrere, with a grateful sense of the many virtuous sentiments inbibed often on this spot from her highly cultivated mind.' Flagged floors with diamonds at the joints. Rear cella chamber has hemispherically headed niches in its flanking walls and over the inner doorway is a Coade stone tablet of a weeping figure. The rear elevation has seated lions on the ends of the cornice. The side walls are of rendered brick and the two flat flanking roofs are of lead.
