Monument to a horse called The Butcher, belonging to Field
Marshall Grosvenor c.1850. Ashlar. In the form of a low obelisk
standing on a rectangular tomb chest on the front panel of which
is a low relief carving of a horse with a docked tail and a tree.
On the rear panel is a poem, 8 lines, recording the circumstances
of old Butcher lying in Morkery Wood, now somewhat worn. A
portrait of "Big Black Butcher" by John Fernley, hangs in
Grimsthorpe Castle. Source: P. Grimes, Secretary and General
