Church. C12 or earlier nave, C13 transepts, C15 west tower and chancel,
south porch rebuilt C19 using old materials. Coursed shelly limestone
rubble to nave and transepts, ashlar elsewhere. Lead roofs. West tower,
4-bay aisled nave with clerestory, south porch, north and south transepts,
east aisle to north transept, 4-bay chancel with north chapel. 4-stage west
tower with triple-chamfered plinth, angle buttresses, and moulded
string-courses. 2-light window with Perpendicular tracery under segmental
head with stepped hood-mould to third stage. 3-light pointed belfry
opening, with Perpendicular tracery with transom, under stepped hoodmould.
Crenellated parapet with 8 crocketed pinnacles. Double-leaf boarded west
door in 4-centred opening with continuous mouldings and hoodmould; tall
pointed 5-light window with Perpendicular tracery under hoodmould with
grotesques to stops and apex. South aisle has one square-headed and
2 pointed 2-light windows, all with Perpendicular tracery. Flat-headed
2-light clerestory windows with Perpendicular tracery to north and to south.
Pointed south door of 3 orders, the outer 2 having nook-shafts, round abaci,
and filleted roll mouldings. Hoodmould with foliage stops. South transept
has rebuilt diagonal buttresses and C19 4-light south window with
Perpendicular tracery. 2-light and 3-light pointed windows to east wall,
the former with Y-tracery, the latter with brattished transom. Low parapet,
low-pitch roof. North transept has pointed windows with Perpendicular
tracery throughout except C13 lancet to west wall. Chancel: double-
chamfered plinth, buttress with offsets, 3 pointed 2-light windows with
transoms and Perpendicular tracery under hood-moulds. Pointed double-
chamfered priests' door with similar hoodmould. Interior: lofty pointed
tower arch with broad capital-band carved with grotesque heads and foliage.
Similar, lower, arches to embracing aisles. Late C12 north arcade with
cylindrical piers, and capitals carved with wide variery of human, animal,
and foliage subjects, and pointed double-chamfered arches under continuous
hoodmould with grotesque stops. Early C13 south arcade of cylindrical
piers, capitals, and abaci supporting double-chamfered arches, under
continuous hoodmould with beak-head stops. Similar arcade to chancel north
chapel and also (with some nailhead) to east side of north transept. North
nave aisle has one late mediaeval truss, with heavily cambered arch-braced
tiebeam, at west end. Late C12 font reset in C19 on central column with
four black shelly marble columnettes. In chancel north chapel: black marble
triptych wall memorial, with incised recumbent figure and mourning family,
to Thomas Dolman, died 1589. Alabaster wall memorial with lengthy
inscription to Robert Sothebie, died 1594, in decorated surround flanked by
columns, to north transept north wall. C14 churchyard cross under west
tower. Early C16 carved wooden alterpiece to chancel south wall.
