Church of St James

II

Church. 1852. By Mallinson and Healey. Sandstone ashlar. Roofs of stone slate and modern tiles. 3-stage west tower, battlemented. South porch. 5-bay aisled nave. 2-bay chancel. Wooden barrel vault with head corbels. Quatrefoil piers and chamfered arches to nave arcade. Decorated tracery, simple 2-light clerestory. The 4-light east window has the monogram of William Wailes in the glass. Fragments of ornate late Norman doorway including arch with beak-head decoration and several small panels with figures and foliage. Pevsner, N., Yorkshire, West Riding, 1967 p117.
