ROCKINGHAM A6005 SP8691 (West side) 12/144 Curtain wall, gates and gatepiers attached to and approx. 50m. N and west of Rockingham Castle
GV II*
Curtain wall, gates and gatepiers. Probably following line of C11 outer wall, mainly C17 and C19. Limestone ashlar base with top courses of squared coursed ironstone with ashlar coping and ball finials at intervals. Ashlar buttresses at intervals. West face at end of yew walk has C18 ashlar gatepiers linked by wrought iron gate with overthrow and leaf decoration. Flight of stone steps attached to left of steps. North-west corner and position of gates are said to be sites of towers in curtain wall. (Rockingham Castle garden is included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*; The Old Halls and Manor Houses of Northamptonshire by J.A. Gotch, p.24).
