Building also returns to Wine Street, east side. Brewery, now workshops. Earliest
section, right,in good limestone ashlar with Welsh-slate roof, ground floor area
in squared and dressed limestone, boundary wall ashlar; middle section squared and
dressed limestone and slate roof; later double unit, left has ashlar to Wine Street,
squared and coursed stone elsewhere, slate roofs. Early unit is ivy-covered at the right end
but appears to have extended further to right originally; 5 storeys set back and partly
built into the rock face, with a series of 6 large round arched vaulted bays formerly
open, some now enclosed at front, under segmental flush arches witha projecting keystone
under a continuous plat-band. Above are 9 bays with small openings to flat 3-centred
heads, all in flush stonework; in bay 4 are 3 loading openings vertically with a fourth
set off to left in the top storey and a similar series in bay 9. The middle section,
set at a slight angle to the first has 3 very lofty open arched spaces rising to the level
of floor 3 in the adjacent block, and with some sub-division within running back to the
rock face. Above are 6 close-set windows below 3 wide-spaced, detailed as earlier block
but with projecting cills. Left-hand block has two coped gables to Wine Street in 3
and 2 bays with alternately 2-light cross-mullioned flush chamfered casements, some
with shutters and loading bay doors, chamfered surrounds and prominent keystones; plinth
dies into slope at left. Right return, hard on street, runs down slope to right in 3
bays in 4 storeys with basement; heads of 3 lights at low level in plinth at ground and
first floor single light casements in flush surrounds, at second floor three 3-light
casements, that to right with small pane glazing; under eaves are three 2-light wood
louvred ventilation openings.

Interior of early block has vaulted chambers to lowest level, then two levels of
malting floors with flat segmental arched vaults on cast iron columns and beams
carried on large stone corbels, upper levels have light iron framework, large open top
floor with queen post trusses; corrugated clear plastic inserted to large areas of
roofing. Second block has iron columns with branched heads, bearing makers' name
STACEY, to wood structure generally.
Boundary wall to Newtownhas large central arch with keystone flanked by blind arches
or square panels with keys. To right is ramp and set back portion of wall stepped up
slope with alternating arched and square panels, the whole returned to original face of
main building. This is a splendid building of Piranesian grandeur very largely as built,
and holding a vital position in the townscape of Bradford on-Avon especially as seen from
the river area.
