7: Crowle House

In 1664, the wealthy merchant George Crowle gave his house a new entrance front, now hidden away at the rear of 41 High Street, which echoes the porch of Wilberforce House, the last stop on this tour.

The architect of both houses was almost certainly the Hull bricklayer William Catlyn who was also responsible for the Olde White Harte on Silver Street. Some of the buildings had so-called Dutch or shaped gables of which one example survives at Charterhouse.
