The main entrance to the Safeway supermarket, Totton, Hampshire

John Laing Plc built the supermarket in 1994 along with a housing development. Planning permission for either was only granted on the condition that the developer provided land for social housing to be built. The building is a classic example of the "belltower and brick" design of many supermarkets built in the 1990s. Safeway, established in 1962, was taken over by Morrisons in 2004 and their 428 shops rebranded. Morrisons then had to sell 51 stores across the country to other supermarket chains due to competition regulations.
