This school was built in 1860 at the expense of Thomas Langton Birley of Carr Hill for the girls' charity school. The school was founded in 1760 on another site. It was built in a Gothic style. Charity schools were run by religious or philanthropic groups. Some were set up by clergymen or local landowners and only ran for a short time.
