East London Water Works, New Road, Barking, Greater London

Men working in a chamber or tunnel at the East London Water Works, Barking. The subject of this photograph is recorded as 'bricking up' in the daybook of Bedford Lemere, the company who took this series of photographs. The workmen appear to be adding a layer of bricks inside the tunnel that has been cut in the rock. This would have made it safer and helped to make it more waterproof. The workmen are dressed for working in very wet conditions.
