CHURCH STREET 1. 1146 Nos. 1 and 2 SK 9136 SE 10/31 8.5.50 II

2. Two houses, (one building) adjoining "Old School' on east. C16 with middle C18 front; 2-storey with attics, stone slate roof, rusticated quoins, moulded stone band between storeys; moulded cornice with pediment 7 windows with moulded architraves and keystones; hung sashes with glazing bars central doorway with moulded architraves, panelled pilasters, scroll brackets, cornice and pediment; window adjoining on west converted into second doorway. Interior of No. 2 has ground floor room lined with early C17 panelling. 1st floor room has early C17 wall painting, masonic and architectural grisaille, (superimposed on a late C16 design, now quite obliterated). Fireplace decoration only remains of completely painted room. Wide fireplace also once painted brick but now partly filled in and colour washed. The easterly of the two 1st floor rooms also has moulded stone jamb of early fireplace (now covered with plaster) which has been filled into accommodate modern firegrate. Interior of No. 1 has panelled rooms of late C17 and early C18 on south side and middle C18 rooms on north side. Ground floor north room contains good middle C18 fireplace from a house of the period in Boston. 1st floor room has original fireplace of circa 1760. Photograph in N.M.R.
