Farmhouse. Probably late C14 with early to mid C15 extensions to east, C16 and C17 alterations and C18 and C19 extension. Stone rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roof, parts to east and north are of stone slate. Originally an H-plan hall house, the north (service) wing no longer exists. Cross wings have extensions; that to north-east a separate item, that to south-east has further extensions to east and north. West facade of 3 bays; angle of north wing remains to left; 3rd bay projects under gable and is roughcast. Windows are straight-headed, with label moulds. 1st and 2nd bays have 2-light double-chamfered-mullioned windows, that to 1st bay has transom and round cusped heads, that to 2nd bay has Perpendicular tracery head, early to mid C15, with escutcheon in tracery. 3rd bay has later single-chamfered-mullioned windows with round-headed lights. All windows have small-paned glazing. Entrance to left has continuous mouldings, hoodmould with head stops and escutcheon. Left return of 3rd bay has blocked light to 1st floor, possibly to light stair. Stones above entrance inscribed: "IM 1647". South elevation has C16 projecting lateral stack with 2 shafts. 1st bay has 3-light straight-headed window of C16, with round-headed lights and label mould. Entrance to 2nd bay replacing window. Other windows are sashed with vertical glazing bars; 2 have casements. Cross-axial stack and lateral stack, corbelled at 1st floor level. East gable end has reset cusped round-headed light; dressed quoins. North elevation has stone slate to roof of medieval part, now masked by C19 lean-to kitchen outshut which has casement windows with rock-faced sills and lintels; C19 extension has windows of 2 elliptical-headed lights. Stack to outshut, which adjoins stair projection to hall under catslide roof. Hall east elevation has windows as to west, but C14 window is blocked and C15 window to right has no mullion. Plainer entrance to right and angle of demolished north wing. Large stack to front of ridge has set offs. North gable end has later lean-to sheds. Interior: screens passage has 3 chamfered pointed entrances, signs of blocked 1st floor entrance. Hall entrance has Tudor head and original door. Hall has C16 fireplace with later infill. Late C15 stained glass roundels: 2 stars, MR and IHC monograms. Entrance with shouldered lintel to stone stair. Parlour has late C16 and mid C17 panelling with decorative friezework; reused panelling to overmantel post next to fireplace curves out to head. Pointed entrance to C15 extension. lstfloor has Tudor-arched fireplace with shouldered architrave; arms of Middleton and Middleton impaling Tunstal (mid C17). Entrance with shouldered lintel.
