HEDDON-ON-THE-WALL (South side) Close House lodge and gateway

II

Lodge, gatepiers, screen walls and railings. Early C19 and early C20. Ashlar and iron. Lakeland slate roof.

Octagonal rusticated gatepiers, with widely-projecting cornices and ball finials, flanked by short stretches of low walling with plain railings; beyond these are serpentine walls c. 6 ft. high with rounded coping, and pilasters. Similar but lower walls continue along the road for c. 40 yards in each direction and end in square corniced piers.

Wall immediately to left of gateway is broken by the end wall of the later lodge. Single storey, 3 x 1 bays. Raised alternating quoins. Central stone porch, with pilasters, cornice and blocking course, flanked by canted bay windows with stone pent roofs. Twin gables with large obliquely-set modillions and moulded coping. Corniced ridge stack. On left return (i.e. breaking into serpentine wall to left of gateway) a C20 window in raised alternating-block surround under similar gable.
