Creativity and Care: new works in English Cathedrals

As public buildings, cathedrals are expected to meet certain standards and to offer modern facilities.

Such a brief is not easy to fulfill. English cathedrals include some of the greatest ancient buildings in Europe, as well as some more recent, but similarly magnificent structures. Each must respect its own history and architectural character; while remaining as relevant as it has always been.

This booklet describes initiatives taken by some of our cathedrals in the last few years. The best of such changes, as the examples here show, display a deep responsiveness to what has gone before. The balance of creativity and care required can be a demanding one, but the results are always worth it. Our cathedrals are extraordinary places; it is possible to enhance their qualities, and make them more accessible to all.
