Birmingham City Council City Framework Consultation Response

Historic England has responded to Birmingham City Council’s recent consultation ‘Our Future City: Draft Central Birmingham Framework 2040’.

What makes Birmingham unique is its rich and varied heritage, its history as a place of enlightenment, innovation, and growth that boasted a thousand trades, helping it develop into England’s second city. Our response welcomes the prospect of Birmingham as a ‘Global leader in a green future’ as an opportunity to enhance and reveal the historic environment.

However, it also makes clear that the draft framework is a missed opportunity to learn lessons from the city’s past and end the cycle of demolition and rebuilding that has characterised the city’s modern history. Any existing historic fabric that can be recycled, reused, and responsibly adapted can help the city become a leader in a green future.
