Sunderland Historic High Streets
Sunderland's 'Historic High Streets at Risk' Heritage Action Zone aims to bring Sunderland's high street heritage back to life.
Focussing on an area covering Fawcett Street, High Street East and West and Church Street East, the scheme will build on work by Sunderland City Council and local partners to revive historic Sunderland and reconnect it with the modern city centre.
Sunderland's Heritage Action Zone has been established to help rejuvenate and unlock the economic potential of this historic area to help it achieve sustainable growth.
An intensive programme of research, repair and regeneration will be co-ordinated by a new Project Manager who will work with the local community to deliver the project.
The Heritage Action Zone will help people to rediscover their fascinating local heritage and will help to change the economic fortunes of the area, at a time of exciting cultural investment in the city.
The scheme will make key links with strategic initiatives such as the Tall Ships in 2018, the recently announced Great Places project and the City of Culture 2021 bid, supporting the area's wider revitalisation.
The Heritage Action Zone will be led by Sunderland City Council in partnership with Historic England, the Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, the Churches Conservation Trust and Sunderland Heritage Forum.
