The Severn Bridge from the south, Aust, Gloucestershire

The construction of the Severn Bridge was completed in 1966 but the designers had under estimated the number of cars and lorries that would use it. It was built to last 120 years but strenghtening work was was required after just 20. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction undertook the strengthening work between 1987 and 1990. In 1990 Laing and the French company GTM won the contract to build a second Severn Crossing that would take the traffic pressure off the first bridge and extend its lifespan even further.
