Ship at anchor on the River Nene, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire

The River Nene enters the Wash below Wisbech and has always been a major route for water transport. The route became neglected and was restored in the 18th century. Following competition from the railways, the Nene was decayed as a navigation by the 20th century. The Nene Catchment Board undertook major reconstruction between 1937-44.
