Seascale Primary School, Croft Head Road, Seascale, Cumbria

A classroom inside the recently built school. The room has double desks. These were common in the 1950s but usually arranged in rows rather than in squares as shown here. A parish school was recorded in Seascale in 1818. It was rebuilt in 1873. A Church of England school was established in 1874. This school replaced the two old schools in 1951. It was built to accommodate all Windscale's worker's children. The architect has included large, airy windows in his design. This photograph comes from the John Laing Company Archive.
