Saffron Walden Hospital, Saffron Walden, Essex

This is a former Union workhouse. It was built in 1837. It could accommodate 340 inmates. It was constructed by James Clephan, after following Sampson Kempthorne's model plan of 1835. Four fever wards were also added in October 1848, which allowed the workhouse to accommodate 400 people. The building had further extensions to it in the 20th century and became a hospital in 1948, with the introduction of the National Health Service.
