HMS Drake, Exmouth Block, Saltash Road, Devonport, Plymouth

Exmouth Block was the last of the 5 original barracks to be built in 1907. The barracks were originally fitted with hammocks. This block is part of one of the finest and most complete barracks complexes in England. It shows the importance and status of the Royal Navy at this time. Sailors lived in hulks (old ships) until their first barracks were built, first at Devonport, then Chatham and Portsmouth.
