Gas retort house at Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon

'Retorts' are ovens in which coal is baked to release coal gas. Before the gas supply network was established, many companies produced gas on a small scale for their own needs in buildings such as this. Coldharbour Mill was a woollen mill using water, steam and gas power: it is now a textile mill museum.
