Coal Tax Post, Esher, Surrey
This coal and wine tax post was put up in c1861. It is one of several such posts. They marked the boundary at which duty (tax) was payable on coal and wine. If you passed the post you had to pay the tax. The tax on coal dated back to the 1660's.
