Bull Ring, Birmingham, West Midlands

The interior of the Bull Ring Shopping Centre shortly it opened in 1964. It was based on American style shopping malls and was the first large scale indoor shopping centre in Britian. It was financed by Laing Properties. There were 140 shop units located in 350,000 square feet of room on a 4-acre site. There were also 19 escalators, 40 lifts and 96 public doors. The shopping centre was air conditioned and had music played to create an intimate atmosphere within the building, a new idea at the time. By the 1980s the design was looking dated and in the year 2000 the whole complex was rebuilt.
