Broad Street, Reading, Reading

A general view looking east along Broad Street, showing the tram lines in the centre of the road, with horse-drawn carriages and people outside the shops. The first trams were introduced in Reading in 1879 and were horse-drawn. In 1903 electric trams began to be introduced to replace the horse-drawn ones. The tram lines in this photograph must still have been used for horses as there are no electric cables above them.
