Battlesbridge, Chelmsford Road, Rettendon, Essex

This road-bridge crosses the tidal River Crouch. Records of bridges on this site date to 1372. This one was built in 1872 by William Webster, at a cost of £3,500. The previous bridge (c1845) by Thomas Hopper was demolished by a steam traction engine. So this bridge was specifically designed to take heavier weights. In the last decade, the bridge has been widened to the west face to accommodate 2 lane traffic.
