Basket Factory, Back Street, Abbotsbury, Dorset

This little building dates from the 18th century. In the 1920s it was the workshop of Mr Dunford the thatcher. He used it for making spars and baskets. Spars are the lengths of split hazel used to hold the thatch in position. Thatchers did this sort of work when the weather was bad. They also often made baskets in their spare time.
