Abbey Gate, Abingdon, Oxfordshire

This gatehouse was built in the 15th century. It was part of Abingdon Abbey. The abbey was founded in Saxon times, in 675. The Benedictine abbey was one of the most important monastic centres in England. The gate house has been in constant use since the Dissolution. First as the borough prison and afterwards as part of the corporation buildings.
