The man at the bench is making surgical instruments, in this case scisors. He is cutting the scissor's teeth, making sure that jaws meet perfectly and that curves and contours are correct. Allen and Hanburys Ltd was established in 1715. Their factory at Bethnal Green opened in 1874 and it was here that the administrative tasks and scientific research of the firm was undertaken, along with the manufacturing of operating tables and a wide array of surgical instruments.
