58 French Street, Southampton, Southampton

This is a late 13th century merchant's house with shop. On stylistic grounds the house appears to have been built around 1290. This date was confirmed by tree ring dating of its major timbers. Investigations carried out by English Heritage between 1983 and 1985 revealed the extent of the surviving medieval structure. Subsequent restoration has returned the house to its medieval appearance. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
