A reconstruction drawing showing the burning of the wooden tower during the massacre of the Jews on the 16th March 1190 by Peter Dunn. During a period of anti-semitic riots the Jews of York took refuge in keep. Rather than surrender to mob outside many chose to commit suicide, the mob then burnt down the wooden keep with the Jews inside.
