STOKE CLIMSLAND HORSEBRIDGE SX 37 SE 8/151 Horse Bridge (that part in Stoke 1.12.51 Climsland CP) Formerly listed as Horse Bridge (that part in Launceston R D))


Bridge over River Tamar. 1437 with later repairs. Roughly coursed slate stone with mainly granite coping and dressings. 5 segmental arches to river with hood-water arch to bank on each side, that to Cornish side more sharply pointed. Arches are recessed with single chamfering and double ring of voussoirs; chamfered imposts and moulded string course. Long abutments and 5 triangular cutwaters/pedestrian refuges, which have projecting brackets on the upstream side. Spans the River Tamar, which here forms the county boundary with Devon. Probably by the same builder as Greystone Bridge, Lawhitton Rural CP (qv). Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No 70; (BOE p 216; MGV Balchin, The Cornish Landscape (1983), p 178).
