The Tower of HMP Manchester (Formery listed as: The Tower of Strangeways Gaol)

Extraction tower for the heating and ventilation system.1866-68, by Alfred Waterhouse. Red brick with sandstone dressings.Octagonal plan. Minaret style, approx.234 feet high, with an archedrecess in each side, a perimeter gallery with brick balustraded parapeton stone corbels, and a domed cupola with louvred openings in the sidesand cast-iron cresting to the roof. A very prominent landmark in this area of the city.
