KIRKHAM CHURCH STREET SD 43 SW 9/23 Tomb of Edward and Elizabeth Birley in churchyard c.50m SE of the porch of the Church of St. Michael - GV II

Tomb chest, c.1836. Carboniferous limestone in the form of a Greek sarcophagus on a plinth. Battered, simply panelled chest with austere, monolithic roof-slab formed as low cross-pediments with antefixae. Commemorates Edward Birley, younger brother of the builder of Hillside on Preston Street (q.v.) who died in 1811, and Elizabeth, his wife, who died in 1836.
