48/358 Nos. 30 to 38 (even) (Prudential Assurance 12.7.66 Building) G.V. II

Office Building. 1885-6.A.Waterhouse, the tower added 1904. Red brick and terracotta with granite to ground floor and red to tiled loft. 5 storeys and attic. 6 bays, canted corner bay and 4 bays to Temple Street. Ground floor has segmented headed windows, 2 with C20 shop fronts. Corner entrance with pointed arched head. 1st floor bays divided by paired polygonal shafts with drainpipes between them. All windows sashed without glazing bars. 1st floor windows segmental- headed . 2nd bay has granite facing and canopied niche for figure. Frieze above with inscription "PRUDENTIAL ASSURANCE BUILDINGS". 2nd floor windows with pointed arches, 1st 2 bays paired, 4th to 6th tripartite. 3rd floor windows segmental headed those to 2nd bay pointed and cusped. 4th floor pointed arched windows. Corner bay has 2-storey canted oriel on brackets; date under paired windows "MDCCCLXXXVI". Corbelled frieze and arcaded parapet, one dormer of 2 lights and one of 3 lights. 2nd bay has 3-stage tower: the lower stage has 3 windows, central one with traceried gable feature over. 3rd stage has 2 balconies with blind arcading under round headed openings. Corbelled cornice with corner water spouts, swept pyramidal roof with surmounting stack. 2 panelled stacks.
