Essex Grazing Marshes Project

Author(s): Adrian Gascoyne, Maria Medlycott

The report forms an assessment of the historic environment in the distinctive and sensitive grazing marshes of the Essex coast. The report was commissioned from Essex County Council by English Heritage, as part of the National Heritage Protection Plan's coastal survey work. It provides a period by period overview of the historic environment of the marshes, their biodiversity and it looks at the threats to this vulnerable physical heritage. It also encompasses intangible heritage such as placenames. The report contains more detailed character assessments for each of 62 individual areas of marshland. The assessment resulted in the creation of records within the county Historic Environment Record.
